Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best way to get a new vehicle authorization number?
After logging on to the home page, select “New Vehicle Purchase” from the navigation bar on the left. Then click “Obtain Authorization.” The online process is quick and convenient for you, and it costs the company much less than the phone process.
- Where can I go for immediate assistance?
Click on the “Contact Us” link on the blue navigation bar, then click on your concern, and we will be happy to assist you. Or, call the automated phone system at 1.800.235.4646.
- I forgot my user name and password. How can I retrieve them?
Click on the “Forgot Your Password” link on the login page and you will be prompted for your user name or email address. Once the system has validated a correct user name or email address, you will be prompted to enter the answer to the secret question you selected during registration. After you provide the correct answer, you will be prompted to reset your password. If you are unable to provide the correct answer to your secret password question after three tries, please call us at 1.800.235.4646.
- Where can I find program eligibility information?
Once you've logged in, the programs you are eligible for will be displayed on the left-hand navigation bar. To find out whom you can refer, click on the Rules and Guidelines contained within each program link.
- How can I change my profile (email address/phone number/address)?
In order to update your profile, log in and then click on the “My Profile” link located on the left-hand navigation bar. Your profile will then be displayed on the page. You can make changes to your email address or phone number. For active employees, any other changes can be made by contacting your HR department or, if you have access to MySocrates, by selecting “Services Home Address Update.” Retirees and surviving spouses should contact the GM Benefits and Services Center at 1.800.489.4646 with address changes.
- I want to view employee pricing, but when I try to link to the special version of gm.com, I am redirected to the standard home page. What is the problem?
This may occur if you are using Internet Explorer version 6 (IE6). By default, IE6 thinks that the employee version of the gm.com site is an outside site and doesn't store the appropriate “cookie” on your hard drive. This results in redirection to the standard webpage. You can resolve the problem by following the steps below:
- In the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Select the Privacy Tab and hit the Advanced button.
- Put check marks in the “Override Automatic Cookie Handling” and “Allow Session Cookies” boxes.
- Restart IE6. The next time you try to link to employee pricing, your desired screens should appear.
- How do I obtain an authorization number for eligible family members?
After logging in, select “New Vehicle Purchase” from the bar on the left. Click “Obtain Authorization.” Then follow the prompts. Enter your family member's date of birth, ZIP code and his or her relationship to you. After confirming the information you entered, you will immediately receive the authorization number, which you can give to your family member.
- Can my family members request an authorization number?
No. Only GM employees, retirees and surviving spouses of eligible participants are permitted to request an authorization number to purchase or lease an eligible new GM vehicle.
- Can my family members access gmfamilyfirst.com?
Yes. Your family members can use the “Start Shopping” or “Get Answers” tabs on the gmfamilyfirst.com home page to find vehicle pricing, regional incentives, vehicle eligibility and more. However, they cannot request an authorization number. The employee must obtain an authorization number when a family member is ready to buy.
- How many GM New Vehicle Purchase Program authorization numbers can I use or share for the calendar year?
You can obtain authorization numbers for the purchase or lease of a total of six (6) vehicles for you and your eligible family members per year.
- How do I find employee prices?
Log in at gmfamilyfirst.com and choose “New Vehicle Purchase” and then “Pricing” from the left navigation bar. This will take you to a page containing two options: price schedules for pricing options on GM vehicles and a special link to gm.com, where you can build a vehicle to your exact specifications. Both options allow you to compare MSRP and GMS pricing.
- Do I have to purchase or lease through GMAC?
You do not have to purchase through GMAC, but leasing arrangements are available only through a GMAC SmartLease, except for vehicles that have no residual or rate support.
- Under the GM New Vehicle Purchase Program, why are there restrictions on certain models?
General Motors may authorize restrictions on certain models for production purposes. When new models are introduced, GM attempts to build an inventory to provide for all consumers. The restrictions may be lifted once production of the vehicle is in full operation. Please check What Vehicles Are Eligible under the “Get Answers” tab to view current restrictions.
- Which GM vehicles are eligible for the employee discount program?

To see a list of excluded vehicles, please go to the “Get Answers” tab on the gmfamilyfirst.com home page and select What Vehicles Are Eligible. Some other models may have limited availability.
